Float and sink

Exhaling makes us sink
Air in our lungs enables us to float
We were swimming as part of conditioning today and became aware of the fact that you sink to the bottom of the pool if you exhale while you're submerged. This is due to the fact that the air in our lungs provides buoyancy because air is lighter than water. When you exhale, this buoyancy decreases, as well as our volume.  What helps us float is the air in our lungs.  The air inside makes our body (especially our lungs and diaphragm) have a greater volume and giving us the buoyancy needed to float.
